Steel, Snow, and Suburbia: The Journey from Narvik to Kiruna

The Arctic Train: A Rail Journey Like No Other

The Arctic Train (running along the historic Ofoten Line) is widely considered one of the most beautiful rail routes in the world. Originally built to transport iron ore from the mines in Sweden to the ice-free port of Narvik in Norway, it is now a must-do for travelers.

  • The Landscape: Watch the scenery transform from the deep, blue fjords of Norway to the high, barren mountain plateaus of Sweden in just 43 kilometers.
  • The History: This line was a strategic prize during WWII. Today, you can take a dedicated “Northern Lights Train” version that stops at remote mountain stations like Katterat, far from any city lights.

Kiruna: The City That is Moving

Kiruna is currently undergoing one of the most radical urban transformations in history. Because the local iron ore mine—the world’s largest underground mine—is expanding directly beneath the town, the entire city center is being moved three kilometers to the east.

  • The New Center: Visit the award-winning Kristallen (The Crystal), Kiruna’s new circular town hall, which serves as the heart of the modern city.
  • Relocated Icons: Watch for historical buildings, including the famous red wooden Kiruna Church, which are being lifted and transported entirely to their new home.
  • The Mine Tour: Go 540 meters underground into the LKAB Visitor Centre to see where the massive operation begins.

Must-Do Experiences in Kiruna

  1. The ICEHOTEL Jukkasjärvi: Only 15 minutes from Kiruna, visit the original hotel made of ice. In 2026, the “ICEHOTEL 365” allows you to step into a frozen world even in the middle of summer.
  2. Dog Sledding & Husky Tours: Kiruna is the hub for Arctic mushing. Join a small-group tour to drive your own team of huskies through the frozen birch forests.
  3. The Space Center: Kiruna is home to Esrange Space Center. While the launch site is restricted, you can visit exhibitions detailing Sweden’s role in European space exploration.

F&Q

Can I take the train from Stockholm to Kiruna?

Yes. The Arctic Circle Train (night train) departs daily from Stockholm, arriving in Kiruna about 12 hours later. It is a comfortable, sustainable way to travel, featuring a popular dining car serving reindeer stew.

Why is Kiruna moving?

The city is moving because the Kirunavaara mine has created ground deformation that threatens the existing buildings. To save the community and continue mining iron ore, the town is being relocated building-by-building.

Is it worth visiting Kiruna during the move?

Absolutely. It is a once-in-a-lifetime chance to see a “city in transition.” You get to experience the brand-new modern architecture of the New Kiruna while still seeing the historic charm of the old town before it disappears.
